From envidia to a culture of cariño, inclusion and collaboration!

April 30, 2023

Envidia, or envy can get in the way of Latina leadership growth and opportunities. Envy can create an unhealthy competitive environment where individuals are more concerned with their own success and achievements, rather than the success and achievements of the community as a whole. Latina leadership call us to create a culture of cariño, inclusivity and collaboration among Latinas!

Lets unpack “envidia” and together promote a culture of collaboration and mutual support:

Envidia: Jealousy and competition can have a detrimental effect on Latinas and can sabotage our personal and professional lives in several ways:

· Affects self-esteem: Constant comparison to others and feelings of jealousy can lower self-esteem and create negative self-talk, leading to self-sabotage.

· Hinders teamwork: Competition and jealousy can negatively impact team dynamics and hinder collaboration, leading to poor team performance.

· Limits growth opportunities: Jealousy can lead to negative attitudes towards others' success, causing Latinas to miss out on growth opportunities and potential career advancement.

· Promotes negative behavior: Competition can sometimes lead to negative behaviors, such as gossiping or spreading rumors, which can harm relationships and damage reputations.

· Creates stress: Constant competition and feelings of jealousy can create significant stress, which can lead to burnout and negatively impact physical and mental health.

To overcome envidia, Latinas can adopt strategies such as:

· Focus on personal growth: Instead of focusing on competition with others, prioritize personal growth and development. This approach can help build confidence and increase skills and abilities.

· Practice gratitude: Instead of focusing on what others have or their successes, focus on gratitude for your own accomplishments and opportunities. This approach can help build positive self-talk and increase self-esteem.

· Embrace collaboration: Focus on teamwork and collaboration, rather than competition. By working together, Latinas can achieve better results and create a supportive and inclusive environment.

·  Avoid gossip and negativity: Avoid engaging in negative behaviors such as gossip and negativity towards others. Instead, focus on positive communication and building relationships based on mutual respect and support.

There is power in Latinas being united and supporting each other. When we unite, we have amplification of our voices, and we have an increase visibility. This “union” can lead to more attention being paid to issues that affect Latinas and our communities and can lead to positive changes. With intentionality,  Latinas can overcome the negative impact of jealousy and competition and build a positive and supportive environment that promotes growth and success for all.
